Getting jammed in all directions: Dynamic shear jamming around a cylinder towed through a dense suspension
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the propagation of dynamic jamming fronts in a dense cornstarch suspension generated by towed body. Previous studies have investigated this phenomenon under pushing, pulling, or shearing, separately. In our experiment we are able to show how front propagates full field surrounding cylinder experiencing and shearing simultaneously. Though propagate symmetrically transverse direction movement, observe fore-aft asymmetry for first time.

High-speed ultrasound imaging in dense suspensions reveals impact-activated solidification due to dynamic shear jamming
A remarkable property of dense suspensions is that they can transform from liquid-like at rest to solid-like under sudden impact. Previous work showed that this impact-induced solidification involves rapidly moving jamming fronts; however, details of this process have remained unresolved. Here we use high-speed ultrasound imaging to probe non-invasively how the interior of a dense suspension re...
متن کاملDynamic jamming point for shear thickening suspensions.
We report on rheometry measurements to characterize the critical behavior in two model shear thickening suspensions: cornstarch in water and glass spheres in oil. The slope of the shear thickening part of the viscosity curve is found to increase dramatically with packing fraction and diverge at a critical packing fraction phi(c). The magnitude of the viscosity and the yield stress are also foun...
متن کاملJamming I: A volume function for jammed matter
We introduce a ‘‘Hamiltonian’’-like function, called the volume function, indispensable to describe the ensemble of jammed matter such as granular materials and emulsions from a geometrical point of view. The volume function represents the available volume of each particle in the jammed systems. At themicroscopic level, we show that the volume function is the Voronoi volume associated to each p...
متن کاملThermal Field Around a Circular Cylinder with Periodic Vortex Shedding
A numerical study is carried out to investigate the laminar forced convection heat transfer from a circular cylinder. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible, the Reynolds number ranged from 0.1 to 1000, and the Prandtl number was equal to 0.7. The range of study includes heat transfer in creeping flow (Re40). The equations were discretized by a control-volume-based finite difference techniqu...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of Compound Control Method around a Cylinder
In this work, the compound flow control method (passive and active) has been described. EHD actuators as wire-plate (active) and splitter plate (passive) were coupled and applied to control fluid flow and heat transfer around cylinder in cross flow. Investigation consists of the interaction between electric field, fluid flow and temperature field. Experimental tests included various positions o...
